The New Naturalism in Planting Design with Kelly Norris.

Kelly Norris

In this era of purposeful and thoughtful gardening, planting is a powerful verb. Planting gardens inspired by nature promotes authentic connections with land, environment and humanity.

Why not make a garden that works and looks good doing it?

Landscapes at home and in the public realm can be beautiful and ecologically functional if we deepen our understanding of plants and place.

In this lecture, especially tailored to garden enthusiasts with examples from around the world, plantsman and author Kelly Norris challenges audiences to plant the world a more beautiful, functional place.

Benjamin Vogt - Fundamentals of Landscape Layers: An opportunity to Re-Think Pretty

Fundamentals of Garden Layers

When designing any garden, there is an opportunity to rethink pretty -- not just pretty for humans, but also for other species and the larger environment.

With careful planning, we can create a space that works with nature by building soil, cleaning water, and nurturing wildlife.

Let’s learn from natural plant communities to increase ecosystem function and climate resilience at home in our designed gardens. From the fundamentals of seasonal and yearly plant succession, to using plant reproduction and sociability to fill ecological niches, the right native plant communities make all the difference for beautiful gardens both wildlife and people crave.

Whether you're starting from scratching or filling in an established border, there's always room for more plants and more ecosystem function.

Benjamin Vogt is the owner of Monarch Gardens LLC, a prairie-inspired design firm based in Nebraska. What People Are Saying:

An honest, authentic, and stirring call to action. I don't want to say that Benjamin and A New Garden Ethic are ahead of their time because their time is right this second. Every person with a relationship to the land -- in any capacity -- will benefit from considering these ideas and reevaluating their established paradigms. Change can be difficult, but never have I heard change presented so eloquently and beautifully, with moments of humor interjected throughout. It caused our audience to want to change for the better, and helped us launch our own 'bluestem roots' movement in Madison. Benjamin is a highly captivating speaker and I would recommend him to any audience.

For years I have had a vision of designing my backyard with native plants and having a backyard prairie. I hesitated in starting this venture myself, as I wanted the design to be aesthetically pleasing and functional for wildlife. After researching the topic, I quickly learned that Benjamin was an expert in this field. Benjamin will exceed your expectations. I look forward to seeing our prairie grow and will continue to use Benjamin on future projects.
